You can’t explore upstate New York without entering Adirondack Park. This park takes up most of northwestern New York – covering more than six million acres of the Empire State. Adirondack Park is home to more than a few adventurous cities, where outdoor fun is not hard to come by.
Saranac Lake is a New York village surrounded by lakes in the northern half of the Adirondack Park. Winter activities – like skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling – abound in this scenic village of just over 5,000 residents.
For more adventure on skis, head to the village of Lake Placid – just 10 miles south of Saranac Lake. Lake Placid visitors choose from Alpine and Nordic skiing thanks to nearby White Mountain and other peaks. Lake Placid is also a hiking, golfing, and fly-fishing town. The village has the most golf courses in Adirondack Park, and lies along the Ausable River – a fly-fisherman’s dream. Lake Placid is also just north of the Adirondack High Peaks – a collection of 46 peaks in the park targeted by hikers from around the world.
Head in the southern section of Adirondack Park for towns like Lake George and Ticonderoga. Found just 40 miles from each other, these Adirondack communities are surrounded by lakes, mountains and trails. Summer activities in Lake George include whitewater rafting and biking through outdoor New York with the Adirondack Bicycle Tours. During the winter months, head to Ticonderoga for chilly adventures like snowmobiling and skiing. Ticonderoga visitors have access to hundreds of miles of snowmobile trails in Adirondack Park, plus a multitude of downhill ski areas within 75 miles of town. Snowshoeing, ice fishing, and ice-skating are all options as well, so bundle up and head to Ticonderoga.
For a real winter wonderland, head to Adirondack Park.
