Syracuse Hancock International Airport, located northeast of Syracuse, opened in 1949, as the Clarence E. Hancock Airport. The first commercial flights were provided by American, Robinson, Buffalo and Colonial Airlines. Soon after the airport was built, Interstate 81 opened adjacent to the airport, allowing direct access to the airport. The airport has seen many improvements throughout the years, including lengthening of the runways, adding runway lighting and an instrument landing system.
