Visiting Syracuse & Central New York
Summer is the season to see central New York. From Syracuse to Utica to Johnson City, a wealth of special events, festivals, and outdoor activities serve as ways for vacationers to get the most out of a visit to the Empire State’s lesser-seen side.
Sports fans know summer means the return of America’s Pastime, and central New York visitors don’t have to drive all the way to NYC for a day at the ball game. The future big-league stars of the Syracuse Chiefs host home games at NBT Bank Stadium through the end of August. Check the schedule during your Syracuse visit to catch MiLB action.
NBT Bank is also the place to be this Fourth of July. After the Chiefs host the Pawtucket Red Sox in the first round of a three-game stand, the sky over the stadium will light up with a dazzling fireworks display set to all of our most beloved patriotic songs. Be sure to get there early to claim the best spot – first pitch is at 7 p.m.
It’s a great time of year for visitors young and old to visit the Rosamond Gifford Zoo. The warm summer weather means the 43-acre facility’s 700-plus animals – which include Asian elephants, Humboldt penguins, and African lions – are more likely to come out and say hello. The zoo also hosts a range of special events throughout the season. Adults won’t want to miss this year’s Brew at the Zoo on August 7th.
The 2016 Great New York State Fair is quickly approaching. The beloved, annual, family-friendly event features all the staples the anticipated 1 milllion fairgoers have come to expect – from midway rides and games and fried festival food to big-name entertainment. This year’s headlining entertainers include Eric Church, Everclear, and Rick Springfield. It’s all held at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse, August 27th through September 7th.
Families visiting Utica can cut the kids loose at the Children’s Museum of Utica. Little ones learn with the help of countless interactive exhibits and activities. Kids can “pilot” a real plane, “conduct” interactive train models, and there’s even a light-up LED dance floor.
