Manhattan’s Central Park
NYC’s 843-Acre Urban Park
One of the more famous New York parks, Central Park is an 843-acre public park located in the heart of New York City. Established in 1857 in Manhattan, this National Historic Landmark is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, and plays host to approximately 35 million visitors a year.
Central Park is framed by 59th Street to the south, 110th Street to the north, Eighth Ave to the west, and Fifth Avenue to the east. Within these borders, explore famed NYC attractions like the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre, Wollman Rink, and Central Park Zoo.
Kids have their choice of 21 onsite playgrounds – including Heckscher Playground – and the country’s largest merry-go-round, the Central Park Carousel.
Central Park recreational activities include jogging on the six-mile Park Drive, rock climbing at Rat Rock, and swimming at Lasker Rink in the summer. Other activities include tennis, baseball, volleyball, and even lawn bowling in Central Park.
Make your way to the Loeb Boathouse for rowboat and kayak rentals and enjoy a day on the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir – also known as the Central Park Reservoir – or take your binoculars over to the Ramble for bird watching.
Central Park is home to several stages for outdoor performances including the Public Theater, Great Lawn, and the Delacorte Theatre, best known for hosting the annual New York Shakespeare Festival. Central Park also features 29 iconic sculptures, plenty of cafes, and the Belvedere Castle – offering tours, exhibits, and an observation deck.
