Visit Syracuse & Central New York
A little winter cold isn’t enough to send residents of central New York running for shelter. Rathern, communities from Ithaca to Johnson City to Cooperstown embrace the cold, inviting visitors to join in a variety of festivals, sporting events, and other family-friendly activities – both indoors and outdoors.
One of the easiest ways to see central NY during the winter and spring is via scenic driving tour. Whether it’s the trips around the Finger Lakes, a drive along the Hudson Valley, or up north near the Adirondacks, New York State is a beautiful destination during this time of year.
Celebrate the season in Liverpool with Lights on the Lake, an annual holiday festival held at Onondaga Lake Park, featuring all sorts of holiday light displays, colorful arches, animated scenes, dazzling villages, and more, all on one quick drive-thru. Lights on the Lake is open from November 16th through January 8th.
Another winter tradition in central NY is cheering on the Syracuse Orange basketball. The Syracuse University Orange compete at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse from early November all the way through February. Don the team’s colors and help them get back to the March Madness tournament this spring.
More festival fun is scheduled for early 2017, as the Fire and Ice Festival returns to Oswego in early February. Now in its 13th year, Fire and Ice promises several days of food, fireworks, kids’ activities, snow activities, and more. Exact dates are TBA.
Not to be outdone, Syracuse WinterFest features tons of wintery festivities in its own right, all for over 10 days. Check the itinerary accordingly – festivities ranges from entertainment and a culinary cruise to team trivia and the Post-Standard Treasure Hunt. Dates are also TBA, but the fest is generally is held in mid February.
When the cold begins to fade away, central New Yorkers will surely be chomping at the bit to get outdoors and let out some pent-up energy. Thus, the 2017 Mountain Goat Run is a prized outdoor event in Syracuse, featuring a kids’ run, 3K, and 10-mile, all on May 7th.
