Catskill Park & Forest Preserve
Hunting, Hiking & Skiing in Central New York
Hiking in the Catskills
Set in central New York, Catskill Park is the second largest New York forest preserve – next to Adirondack Park. Located on 700,000 acres in the scenic Catskill Mountains, Catskill State Park is roughly three hours northwest of New York City, and just north of towns like Monticello and Poughkeepsie.
Catskill Park is a popular destination for hunting, hiking, and huge payoffs when it comes to nature viewing. A four-season destination, Catskill Park has plenty of activity for traveling families, romantic getaways, or outdoor outings with friends.
Visiting Catskill Park during your summer vacation? Choose from hiking, fishing, canoeing, and rock climbing. Hike along the Vernooy Kill Falls – a 3.6-mile trail taking you past footbridges, pools, and scenic waterfalls.
Or try the six-mile Rochester Hollow trail, the five-mile Kanape Brook, and dozens of quick, one-mile treks for those traveling with children. Fishermen can head to Beaver Kill for brown trout fishing, while hunters may scout for deer, bear, turkey, and more.
Heading to central New York in the winter? Find plenty of ski areas, snowmobile trails, and hills for tubing and sledding in Catskill Park. Check out Catskill ski slopes like Windham Mountain Ski Resort, Plattekill Mountain, Hunter Mountain Ski Area, and Belleayre Mountain. Ice climbing is another popular winter activity in Catskill Park. Climbers usually seek the ice of Kaaterskill Clove, Platte Clove, Stoney Clove, and Deep Notch.
Other activities in the Catskill Mountains include mountain biking, swimming, and nature photography. Explore the vast Catskill State Park, a great way to experience outdoor New York.
