Buckhorn Island State Park
Set between the cities of Niagara Falls and Buffalo, Buckhorn Island State Park serves as a living exhibit of the Niagara River wetlands – featuring everything from biking and hiking to cross-country skiing and kayaking.
Buckhorn Island State Park is an 895-acre preservation of marsh, meadows and woodland habitats. The park features nature trails, hiking trails, and biking trails – all of which are pet-friendly toward leashed, domestic animals.
Try fishing, canoeing and kayaking on the Niagara River, or wait till winter and cross-country ski along the five-mile Long Trail. Snowshoeing is also a popular activity during the winter months at Buckhorn Island.
The park is also considered the Buckhorn Island Bird Conservation Area. Birdwatchers need remember their binoculars, and keep an eye out for a total 25 species of waterfowl and 19 species of gull – including ring-billed gull, moorhens, and greater scaup.
Buckhorn Island State Park is free to the public, and open daily from dawn until sunset.
